Dance school

Dance schools are establishments where dance teachers teach ballroom dancing on a profit basis. A dance school may only be operated with the authorisation of the competent authority.

The 2014 Dance School Act regulates the teaching of ballroom dancing, including standard and modern dances as well as Latin dances. The 2014 Dance School Act does not cover artistic dancing or continuing folk dancing traditions.

A dance school is an institution in which instruction in ballroom dancing is provided on a commercial basis. If you want to run a dance school, you must register with the competent authority.

Dance lessons can be provided

• in permanent dance schools for an indefinite period or
• on a temporary basis, without a fixed place of instruction.

 

Anyone wishing to give dance lessons must provide evidence of fulfilling the required conditions. In addition, if dance lessons are to be given in a permanent dance school for an indefinite period, the place of instruction must be indicated to the administrative authority.

An application is required for:

• recognition of qualifications
• exemption from parts of training and/or examinations.

The administrative authority must be notified of the following:

• the provision of dance lessons
• the place of instruction (in the case of permanent dance schools) and if this changes
• the appointment of a Managing Director under the Dance School Act
• the continued operation of a dance school
• restructuring
• surrendering of the dance school licence

Note: Dance teacher training acquired abroad (only german) may be recognised.

Note that in order to take up and pursue an activity, authorisations are usually required and procedures must be followed under several legislative provisions. The information provided here may therefore only represent a portion of the necessary formalities.
